Overview
Quantity-Based Payouts let admins create bonuses or deductions based on the number of merchants an agent activates during a selected period. The resulting payouts are added to the agent's residual report as dynamic line items (DLIs).
Quantity-Based Payouts support the following rule and reporting options:
- Thresholds: Set different payout amounts for different activation ranges. For example, you can pay one bonus for fewer than five activations and a higher bonus for five to ten activations.
- Flat or dynamic payouts: Pay a fixed amount when an agent reaches a threshold, or calculate the payout based on the number of activations within a range.
- Deductions: Enter a negative payout amount to apply a fee or deduction instead of a bonus.
- Residual reporting: After you assign the rules to users and generate the line items, the payouts appear in the residual report. The details show which merchant activations contributed to each calculation.
Use this feature to add activity-based compensation to residual payouts. For example, you can reward agents for reaching merchant activation targets without calculating and entering each bonus manually.
Add a Dynamic Line Item (DLI)
The following example shows how to create a DLI that rewards agents based on the number of merchant activations they complete. You will define the payout ranges, configure the DLI, assign it to users, and generate the resulting line items.
Example use case
An organization wants to reward agents based on the number of merchant activations they completed last month. The DLI uses three activation ranges:
- 0–4 activations: Pay a flat $100.
- 5–9 activations: Pay a flat $250.
- 10 or more activations: Pay a flat $500.
The system evaluates each agent's activation count for the selected date range and generates the payout for the applicable threshold.
The completed DLI contains three threshold levels:
Configure the example DLI
-
Go to Manage → Residuals → Dynamic Line Items, then click Add New Dynamic Line Item. The DLI configuration window opens.
- In Name, enter a descriptive name, such as Monthly Merchant Activation Bonus. This name identifies the DLI in reports.
- In Note, enter a brief description, such as Flat bonus based on last month's merchant activation count.
- In Column, select Activation Count. The system uses this residuals metric to determine which threshold applies. Currently, Activation Count is the only supported option.
- In Operation, select Sum. The system totals the agent's activations for the selected date range. Currently, Sum is the only supported option.
- In Date Range, select Last Month. You can also select This Month or Last Calendar Quarter.
- Configure the first threshold for 0–4 activations, then enter 100 in Payout.
- Click Add Rule. Configure the new threshold for 5–9 activations, then enter 250 in Payout.
- Click Add Rule again. Configure the final threshold for 10 or more activations, then enter 500 in Payout.
- Leave the checkboxes in the Dynamic column cleared. This ensures that each applicable threshold pays the flat amount entered in Payout.
-
Review the settings, then save the DLI. You can edit or delete saved DLIs from the Actions column.
With these settings:
- Agents with 0–4 activations receive a flat payment of $100.
- Agents with 5–9 activations receive a flat payment of $250.
- Agents with 10 or more activations receive a flat payment of $500.
Assign users and generate line items
After configuring the DLI, assign it to the users it should apply to. Then generate the line items to add the calculated payouts to those users' residual reports.
- In the saved DLI's Actions column, click the gear icon.
- In the DLI configuration window, select the Assign Users tab.
-
Select the users you want to assign. Use the available filters if needed, then click Apply.
-
Click Generate Line Items. Select the appropriate users, then click Generate Line Items in the dialog.
☝️ This action generates DLIs for each selected user who is assigned to one or more DLIs on the configuration page. If a selected user has no assigned rules, the system does not generate a line item for that user.
-
After the DLIs are generated, open the Line Items tab in the residuals report to view them.
-
To view a user's DLI details, click the icon in the Description column. The dialog shows the complete calculation details, including links to the activated merchants.
You can also add line items manually to make additional adjustments. For more information, see Line Items.
Dynamic payouts
A dynamic payout multiplies the number of qualifying activations within a threshold range by the payout amount for that range. Use this option when the payout should increase with each qualifying activation instead of paying a single flat amount.
To make a threshold dynamic, select its checkbox in the Dynamic column:
For example, suppose the first threshold pays a flat $100 for the first five activations, and the next threshold pays $50 dynamically for each additional activation. If an agent has eight activations, the payout is calculated as follows:
- $100 for the first threshold.
- $150 for the three additional activations (3 × $50).
- Total payout: $250.
Negative DLIs
A negative DLI applies a fee, deduction, or other negative adjustment to an agent's residual report.
To create one, configure the DLI and its threshold rules as usual, then enter a negative number in the applicable Payout field. For example, enter -50 to generate a $50 deduction when the applicable threshold is met.
☝️ If you enter zero in the Payout field, the system does not generate a DLI in the residual report.
Update or delete dynamic line items
To edit a DLI, click the gear icon in the Actions column, then update the settings in the DLI configuration window. Save your changes and click Generate Line Items again.
If the selected date range has not changed, the system removes the previously generated DLIs from the residual report and replaces them with new DLIs based on the updated threshold rules.
To delete a DLI configuration, click the delete icon in the Actions column. Deleting the configuration does not automatically remove line items that it previously added to residual reports.
To remove those generated line items, click Generate Line Items again. The system removes the previously generated DLIs for the selected period.
☝️ The system removes DLIs from the residual report only when no users are assigned within the selected date range. If one or more users remain assigned, the DLIs are not removed.
☝️ Removing generated DLIs from residual reports does not affect line items that were added manually on the residual report page.
